St Austell resident, Mark Williams, a devoted father and former British Army member, is preparing to tackle the iconic London Marathon this year. His participation is not just a personal feat, but a profound statement of resilience as he runs in aid of Leukaemia Care, the national blood cancer charity that has provided crucial support to him and his family throughout his ongoing health battle. Mark, who turns 40 this year, was first diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in 2017. After a period of intensive treatments, he received a life-saving stem cell transplant from an anonymous donor in America. Tragically, the cancer returned in 2022, meaning Mark now faces lifelong active treatment. Despite these immense challenges, his spirit remains unbroken, embodying a powerful message of hope for all who know him.
Running with Purpose: A Family’s Inspiration
Mark’s motivation for running extends beyond the finish line; it’s deeply rooted in his love for his wife Shannon and their two children, Alfie and Aliyah, as well as profound gratitude for his donor, Kenton. “I’m running for my family, for Kenton who gave me a second chance, and for others facing blood cancer,” Mark explains. His journey has given him a unique perspective, reinforcing the importance of seizing opportunities. After a setback in November due to a virus, which halted his training, Mark made a determined return to running in January, feeling stronger than ever. He has embraced the physical and social aspects of marathon training, joining a local running club and proudly wearing his Leukaemia Care top in local races. His story resonates across Cornwall, inspiring communities from St Austell to those who regularly go to Newquay and other vibrant Cornish towns, demonstrating the true power of community spirit.
