A recent healthier lifestyle proved to be a double-edged sword for Mevagissey and St Austell Bay Councillor James Mustoe, whose wedding ring slipped from his finger while walking his beloved dogs on Porthpean Beach. Having shed a remarkable four stone since turning 40 last year, Cllr Mustoe discovered a new problem: his cherished ring, once a snug fit, was now too loose. The loss plunged him into immediate distress, as the white gold band carried immense sentimental value despite its material simplicity. He recounted sleepless hours filled with worry, understanding the long odds of recovering such a small item on a busy stretch of coastline frequented by many, including dog walkers enjoying the fresh air and open space provided by ‘dog on beaches’ policies. His journey to better health, involving reduced food intake, fewer pasties, and increased walking, had brought positive changes, but this unexpected consequence was certainly a setback.

Operating on a free-of-charge basis, these two remarkable individuals travel across the county to help reunite people with their lost precious items. The story reached its heartwarming conclusion when David and Den, travelling from Launceston, arrived at Porthpean Beach. Armed with their metal detectors and expertise, they located Cllr Mustoe’s wedding ring in an astonishingly short time – just 15 minutes after beginning their search. The relief and gratitude felt by Cllr Mustoe were immense, as he declared he had ‘never been so happy to get his wedding ring back,’ a moment that truly renewed his faith in humanity. In recognition of their selfless act, Cllr Mustoe announced his intention to make a significant donation to David and Den’s chosen charities: the RNLI and the Cornwall Air Ambulance. This heartwarming tale, set against the backdrop of Porthpean Beach, serves as a powerful reminder of the generosity and interconnectedness found throughout Cornwall.
