In a desperate, instinctive attempt to protect his beloved companion, Mr. James scooped Winston into his arms and lifted him above his head. During this heroic act, the aggressive dog lunged, biting Mr. James severely on the arm, creating a painful wound that would not release its grip until its owner intervened. The traumatic injury required immediate hospital treatment, including a tetanus jab and antibiotics, and resulted in four days off work for the St Ives chef, leaving him physically wounded and deeply shaken.

Mr. James expressed profound concern over the incident, particularly highlighting the potential danger if children or other vulnerable individuals had been present, noting, “I dread to think what would have happened if my friends and their kids had been with us.” He recounted feeling like “collateral damage” between the two dogs and now fears for the safety of other pets and people in the community, especially as the incident occurred near an area often used by families. Following the attack, he reported the incident to Devon and Cornwall Police. Officers attended and subsequently issued a Dog Control Order against the German Shepherd and its owner. He is actively seeking further action, advocating for the dog’s removal and assessment away from its current environment, frustrated by what he perceives as a lack of ongoing police engagement despite his repeated calls to 101.
