Bodmin’s New State-of-the-Art GP Surgery Transforms Former Supermarket

The town of Bodmin in Cornwall has marked a significant advancement in its healthcare provision with the opening of a state-of-the-art GP practice, Bodmin Surgery, within a former Lidl supermarket on Boundary Road. This £10.5 million project, a collaborative effort between NHS England and local partners, represents a transformative upgrade from the previous Stennack House premises, which were widely considered cramped and no longer fit for purpose. The new facility boasts an impressive 19 consulting and treatment rooms, alongside dedicated wellbeing spaces, designed to offer comprehensive medical services in a modern environment.

This relocation is a crucial response to the increasing healthcare demands of Bodmin and its surrounding areas, driven by population growth. The new surgery is equipped to accommodate 18,000 patients immediately, with the infrastructure in place to expand its capacity to serve up to 25,000 individuals. Patients will benefit from vastly improved accessibility, larger and more comfortable waiting areas, and a substantial dedicated car park with 100 spaces, addressing long-standing issues with parking and access at the old site. Dr Todd Faulds, a GP and partner at the practice, described the move as a “huge step forward” and “transformative,” highlighting the enhanced environment for both patients and staff.

The community relevance of this development is profound. It not only provides essential healthcare services but also revitalises a previously derelict commercial space into a vital community asset. Debbie Richards, Chief Executive of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly ICB, underscored the project as a “major milestone” and a “significant investment” in local health infrastructure. Similarly, local MP Steve Double praised it as “fantastic news” and a “brilliant new facility,” acknowledging the immense improvement it brings. Cornwall Council’s Cllr Olly Monk also recognised its “transformational” impact, affirming its role in delivering vital services.
