Hereford Boosts Local Businesses with Free Parking Amidst City Revamp

Hereford city centre businesses are receiving crucial support through a free Saturday parking initiative, launched to counteract the disruption caused by the ongoing £6m “Future High Street” regeneration project. The scheme, which commenced on Saturday, 18 May, offers complimentary parking in all council-owned car parks for “a number of weeks,” aiming to encourage residents and visitors to continue frequenting local shops despite the extensive works. This measure is a direct response to the impact of the town centre’s transformation.

The regeneration efforts, focused on key retail areas like Widemarsh Street, High Town, Commercial Street, Broad Street, and Eign Gate, involve significant improvements such as new paving, street furniture, enhanced drainage, and modern lighting. While these upgrades are designed to drastically improve the town’s appearance and long-term appeal, they have presented considerable challenges for local traders. Shop owners, including Sarah Smith from The Little Princess Shop, have reported a noticeable decline in footfall and takings, attributing this to the presence of construction barriers, noise, dust, and restricted pedestrian access around their premises. Steve Roberts from Off The Wall also highlighted the daily struggles faced by businesses.

Councillor Pete Stoddart, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for transport and regulatory services, emphasized the vital importance of supporting these independent businesses during the construction phase. He urged the community to utilize the free parking and visit the city centre, acknowledging the difficulties faced by traders. The Hereford Business Improvement District (BID) has warmly welcomed the initiative, recognizing it as a necessary measure to help businesses navigate the current climate. Despite the short-term inconvenience, there’s a collective hope that the completed works, expected by autumn, will culminate in a “grand re-opening” that revitalizes the city centre and boosts its economic prosperity for years to come. This community-focused effort highlights the collaborative approach to preserving Hereford’s vibrant local economy amidst essential urban development.
